What is GaN?

Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a crystalline-like material capable of conducting higher voltages. Current flows faster through components made of GaN than silicon, resulting in higher and faster power transfers. GaN is more efficient, and so there is less heat.

GaN is used in the production of semiconductor power devices as well as RF components and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). GaN has demonstrated the capability to be the displacement technology for silicon semiconductors in power conversion, RF, and analog applications.

Why GaN Is Important?

Due to its capacity to provide superior performance across a variety of applications while requiring less energy and physical space to do so when compared to current silicon based solid state switches aka FETs, Gallium Nitride (GaN) is gaining in significance. Gallium Nitride based FETs are becoming critical in some applications where silicon as a platform for power conversion has reached its physical limits, while in others the advantages of efficiency, switching speed, compactness, and high-temperature operation combine to make GaN increasingly appealing.

A switch to GaN technology will assist to meet demand while reducing carbon emissions as the world’s need for energy grows. In fact, it has been demonstrated that the design and integration of GaN may provide next-generation power semiconductors with a carbon footprint that is ten times smaller than that of slower, older silicon chips.
